Liverpool pay the penalty as duo decide to stay

Liverpool look set to throw away a few more millions after Paddy Berger and Jari Litmanen confirmed that they are to remain at Anfield until their contracts expire.

Litmanen has rejected the opportunity to join Galatasaray although the only loss here will be in wages, believed to be in excess of £50,000 per week. He was available on a free transfer (to reduce the wage bill) but he's decided to sit it out at Anfield rather than take a 50% wage cut by moving to Turkey. Of course he'll tell you it would break his heart to leave the club and that he's staying at the club to fight for a first team place. What a waste of time signing such a talented played in the first place and then allowing him to rot on the bench.

"The only thing I can say is that Jari Litmanen is staying at Liverpool. He won't go to Turkey," said Jari's agent.

Berger, he's no mug either. He didn't go out of his way to find a new club so he'll stay until at least January and collect his Anfield wages while Liverpool have to accept that the chances of receiving a few million pounds have now gone as he'll be off on a Bosman - unless of course the manager can trick him into signing a new contract by giving him a few run outs between now and Christmas.

"The transfer deadline comes on August 31st and I do not intend to go anywhere before that date," confirmed Berger. "But on January 1st I will become a free agent. If the situation at Liverpool is still the same by then, I would start to think about moving."
