Liverpool plea for Hillsborough anniversary fixture change

If Liverpool overcome Real Madrid in the Champions League they have asked UEFA to ensure their quarter-final will be played on Tuesday 14th April, allowing ground staff to prepare Anfield for the memorial service and for players to attend.

"We have written to Uefa and pointed out the significance of April 15 if we do get to the quarter final," said a club spokesman.

"We asked that we would wish not to play on that date and if April 14 would be considered."

The city have made arrangements for both cathedrals and the city's civic buildings to chime 96 times for those who lost their lives in 1989 - the first time they will have done so since the end of the Second World War.

Liverpool fans will also be urged to purchase You'll Never Walk Alone from iTunes on the week of the anniversary to ensure it reaches number one in the download chart.
