Liverpool win FA Youth Cup

Liverpool were beaten 2-0 by Man City at the City of Manchester Stadium last night but their excellent performance in the first leg at Anfield ensured the Reds lifted the cup.

Liverpool didn't play as well as they can last night, especially in the first half. City were doing all the attacking with Daniel Sturridge and first team player Micah Richards both coming close to giving City the lead on the night. Jack Hobbs and Godwin Antwi both had to be at their sharpest in the early moments to keep City out.

The Reds almost scored on the break after half an hour when Adam Hammill ran clear and played the ball through to Ryan Flynn whose powerful shot stung the hands of the City goalkeeper.

It was 1-0 to City only moments later however. Sturridge received the ball 20 yards out and struck a fantastic goal into the top corner that gave Liverpool keeper David Roberts no chance.

The half time whistle couldn't come soon enough for Liverpool at that point and Steve Heighway used the break to make a defensive change; Miki Roque coming on for Charlie Barnett.

Liverpool started the second half much better and created a couple of half chances for an equaliser. However they received a body blow on 56 minutes when Sturridge scored his second of the night to bring City that little bit closer.

With City having 35 minutes to find just one goal it was a back to the wall job for the young Reds, and they stood up to the challenge excellently. They threw themselves in front of every City attack and their efforts were rewarded when the ref blew for full time and Stephen Darby was able to lift the FA Youth Cup.
