The Spanish club have confirmed that they have approached Liverpool regarding the Argentinian midfielder.
Mascherano has two years left on his current deal and manager Rafael Benitez has recently commented that negotiations are in progress on a new deal, but the player remains coy on his future.
"I am a Liverpool player and, like the manager says, I have two more years on my contract so I think I don't have to say anything else," he said. "I play for Liverpool and will continue playing and trying to give my best."
