The Scotsman admits that he has been left perplexed by Liverpool's eleven game run without victory, but he is sure that Houllier is still the man to return the Anfield club to their former glory.
He said: "I've managed to watch a lot of Liverpool this season, most of it thanks to the television and it's hard to believe what's happened.
"During the two years I was there I don't think we ever lost twice on the run, but to go 11 without a win is something I just can't understand.
"When I was at Liverpool I'd like to think I made a contribution, but I have to say it was also a great help to me to work with so many young, quality players. It's good to have players who can bounce off each other because you never stop learning in this game.
"Needless to say I'm very supportive of everyone at Liverpool and the job Gerard and his staff have done.
"The Liverpool people and staff were terrific to me and I look for their results straight away. I'm sure Gerard knows who his supporters are, that will be very important to him, and I certainly consider myself one.
"Liverpool just need a good result and then they'll crack on from there. Of course, the expectations at a club as big as that are par for the course, but things change quickly with a good win."
