McAuley praises Arsenal

The Gunners won 2-1 at Anfield last night to wrap up a 6-2 aggregate win and lift the FA Youth Cup. Hugh McAuley praised his opponents after the game and admitted they were deserving winners.

"We came up against a good team with some very talented footballers who pass the ball very well so we eat humble pie, but are grateful for the experience we've had in getting to the final," said the under 18's coach.

"The boys have done tremendously well to get this far but Arsenal have been the best youth team in the country this season.

"I thought we gave a better performance in the second half. We had a lot more energy in our play and when we got it back to 1-1 you think we've then got a chance to do quite well, but we conceded an unfortunate own goal.

"But credit to Arsenal, they were the best team over the two legs and they fully deserve to win the Youth Cup.

"Arsenal are very good at passing the ball and getting in behind you, and I think the biggest thing we have learned over these two games is when you win the ball back you don't give the ball away so carelessly at times.

"We competed very well tonight against a really good team. It's always a great learning curve for the young players to play in a cup final and show what they are all about."
