The defensive duo kept Chelsea at bay last night as the Reds booked their place in the FA Youth Cup quarter finals with a 1-0 win over the Rent Boys and earned the praise of McAulley.

"It was a great night and for many of the boys it was their first experience of playing at Anfield," said the under 18's coach.

"We need to improve our possession at times and keep the ball for longer periods but I thought the overall effort was superb from everybody against a very talented Chelsea side.

"We worked hard to deny them time and space and I thought our two centre backs, Ayala and our captain Kennedy, were superb from start to finish.

"Joe is a local lad who wants to do well. He competes well every time he plays and gives it everything he has got.

"He has improved tremendously over the last 18 months, and credit to Daniel alongside him as well. He always wants to do well and played very well. They were against a very good Chelsea forward line.

"There is a lot of work still to do with our young players but we beat a good Arsenal team here last year and a good Chelsea team tonight.

"We know we have a lot to improve on with the technical side of our game at times but there's no denying the guts and endeavour these young boys have.

"We have some very talented players at the Academy and hopefully they will push on now."
