Gerrard turned out for the reserves against Tranmere on Friday and scored in a 2-2 draw. After the game McMahon hailed the world class contribution of the captain.
"There were a lot of positives for me to take from this game not least seeing the main attraction Steven Gerrard score a really good goal," said the reserve team boss.
"Steven is different class and he wanted to play tonight. He was a real inspiration to the young players and they can learn from playing alongside a world class player like him.
"He is a model professional and his attitude in the dressing room before the game and at half-time was fantastic. Young lads look up to Steven and they can only learn from that.
"Adam Hammill did very well when he came on and had some good moments."
