Mellberg, whose Villa side are vying for the Champions League placed currently occupied by Gerrard's Liverpool, believes that the Anfield captain will play an ntegral part in England's hopes of success.

Mellberg said: "I know why expectations are so high because these are real quality players. The squad as a whole and individually is excellent. They are big stars and are doing ever so well.

"But if I were asked to pick two players to beware of they would certainly be Paul Scholes and Steven Gerrard.

"Gerrard has had a good season, even if that hasn't quite been the case for Liverpool. Scholes has been injured, but this season, just like any other for him, he has tended to play extremely well."
