The promising young striker had given the Reds a first half lead, but his good work was soon undone by Michael Tonge.

He said: "I'm bitterly disappointed. I thought I'd scored the winner in a semi-final and I was really excited. Then we lost the two goals and lost the game. I'm really upset."

Mellor, though, still has he memory of first Liverpool goal to ease the pain: "That was quite far out for me! I was really pleased with it and when I'm in bed tonight, I'll be thinking that it was a screamer from 30 yards!"
