The 21-year-old Melwood graduate scored just two goals in a disappointing spell with the Hammers and saw his chances of regular first team-football fade with Alan Pardew's decision to bring striking trio Brian Deane, Bobby Zamora and Marlon Harewood to Upton Park.

Mellor, who was kept at the first division promotion-chasers until their FA Cup involvement was brought to an end by Fulham, admits that he is only too happy to make an early return to Merseyside.

Mellor, speaking to the club's official website, said: "I have had some experience, although it has not been as much as I would have liked.

"I have certainly improved as a player and hopefully I can bring that back to Liverpool.
