Mellor ready to fight for first team spot

When Neil Mellor strode through on goal, with the roar of the Kop willing him on, he thought his Anfield dream had come true. The base of a post was all that separated him from his moment of glory. In reality, he knows that several international strikers are what really stand between him and lasting success

"I honestly thought I'd scored," said Mellor after the match. "It fell to me on my left foot, which isn't my strongest, but as the ball rolled towards goal and I heard the roar of the Kop I thought it was going in. I couldn't believe it when it came back off the post.

"I had a few chances during the game and I'm disappointed I didn't make the goalkeeper work a bit harder. I should have hit the target more."

He said: "The manager said I was close to playing against Southampton in the last round and that I would play in future rounds if the team progressed in the competition. He told me at the weekend I would be starting against Ipswich and I was excited ever since.

"But I was very nervous in the first half and I needed the other players to help me along and make sure I got through it okay. It took me a while to settle down because reserve team football, which is what I'm used to, is completely different to this.

"I'd love more first team action but there's a massive squad here and I'm aware of the quality of the strikers ahead of me. They are all established internationals and it's going to be hard for me to play ahead of them. I know that, but I'll keep working hard and hopefully get another chance soon."
