"We all expect the manager to go and buy another striker when the window opens and I know what that might mean for me," said Mellor.

"I just want to make as good an impression as I can between now and then, so that the manager knows he can rely on me.

"I've really enjoyed the last month. I've had a chance, scored a few goals and it has given me a taste of first team football.

"I know I'm not the most attractive of players to watch and I know what people say. But my style seems to have been effective and that?s the important thing.

"The gaffer has told me to go out, enjoy my football and do my best. I still have two-and-a-half years left on my contract and he said that's a lot of time to improve my game, and that's what I want to do.

"I will just keep plugging away and trying to improve certain aspects of my game because I want to make the grade here. I don't want to leave Anfield."
