Mellor time will arrive

The 21-year-old striker has struggled to make an impact at Upton Park due to the excellent form of Jermain Defoe and Republic of Ireland forward David Connoly but he insists that his time at the first division club will prove to be a crucial experience.

Mellor said: "The gaffer has been really good. He's called me a few times to see how I'm doing, as has Hugh McAuley. I really appreciate that. It can be difficult when you move to a city like this one. It's not easy, but it was a similar situation when I moved to Liverpool. Ihad to find digs in a new city and grow up. When I go back to Liverpool next season, I will be a more mature player on and off the park.

"It was important to me to hear the boss say I was still part of his plans. He explained after the friendly at Aberdeen I would be fourth choice and it would be hard for me to play regularly. "I decided it would be better to play in the First Division than play another year of reserve football. But the aim is definitely still to make it at Liverpool."
