Mellor understands England snub

Mellor, who has scored 36 goals in his last 36 appearances for the reserves, believes that he must appear more regularly for the senior Liverpool side if he is to force his way into Platt's plans.

Mellor said: "You look at people like Jermain Defoe, who's played lots of games for his first team and you can understand why I'm not selected.

"If I had a bit more Premiership experience under my belt and done as well I might think differently, but not at the moment.

"But it will always be England for me. I wouldn't think about playing for another country."
