Mellor's pride

Mellor, who is currently recovering from tendonitis in both knees, played a vital part in getting the Reds out of the group stage, scoring a vital goal against Olympiakos.

"I'm just pleased I've been able to play my part in the competition this year. I'll never forget the night against Olympiacos. I came on when it was 1-1, just after Flo had scored to give everyone a lift. Then I was pleased to score myself with about ten minutes to go and then I managed to get an assist to set one up on a plate for Stevie which he couldn't really miss!" said Mellor.

"Everyone will remember his goal because it was such a brilliant strike, but I think the fans are more than aware that Flo and I contributed in that game as well. I was just pleased to be part of it and to help the team stay in the tournament.

"The gaffer has given everyone a chance this season, especially the youngsters. We've all been delighted to be involved in the big games because we haven't been in the past. Everyone has played their part and if we do win then it's a squad effort. Some have played more games than others, but we'll all celebrate together.

"I've been to all the Champions League games at Anfield and cheered the lads on. The home game with Chelsea was very special. Although I wasn't playing it was a great night and one I really enjoyed. At the end of the game I stayed in my seat for another half an hour and joined in the singing with the fans. The emotion took over. No-one expected us to get this far and so it was a great achievement from the lads.

"Now we want to go on and win it. AC Milan were the favourites before the competition started and they're definitely one of the best sides in Europe. They've got some great players but we've proved we can match anybody this season. We battered Leverkusen, we weren't favourites against either Juventus or Chelsea but we beat them both. There's no reason why we can't beat AC Milan as well.

"On a personal note this has been a good season for me in terms of playing games and scoring goals, but obviously the injury problems have been disappointing. I've given the fans some nice moments this year which is pleasing, but now I've tasted it I want it more and more."
