Mexes move not official

The growing rumours linking the young French international with a switch to Gerard Houllier's side reached fever pitch when Roux was quoted as saying that the 22-year-old 'knows Liverpool is his destination when the season finishes' by the club's official site.

The player himself has since mdae it clear that Liverpool's hopes of securing his signature would depend on their qualification for the Champions League, and his current employers have now chosen to speak out against the speculation.

A statement released on Auxerre's website said: "Guy Roux is not in the habit of expressing himself on the Liverpool website. The quotes saying Philippe Mexes will play for Liverpool are consequently the fruit of a web surfer's imagination."
