Midfielder hoping to stay

Welsh has been a reserve team regular since being promoted from the Academy a few years back. Although higly rated by Hugh McAuley and the Academy staff, Welsh was continually overlooked by Gerard Houllier. His continued omissions seemed to affect his confidence and as a result Darren Potter moved ahead of him in the pecking order when Rafael Benitez arrived at Anfield.

However, Welsh has again started to show the form that earned him comparisons with Steven Gerrard and while many teams would like to sign him, the Liverpool fan wants to stay and force his way into Benitez' plans.

Welsh said: "I'm at one of the best clubs in the world. I've always supported them and I love the club.

"So I'll be patient. I know there's a lot of good players there but the gaffer has shown he'll put the young kids in if they deserve it.

"The gaffer keeps talking to me, telling me what I should be doing, so I listen to him and take it from there.

"You need first team football as you go along but Rafa Benitez wants me to stay at Liverpool. I love the club and want to make it there."
