Steven Gerrard has been nominated for the Laureus Awards in the World Newcomer of the Year category.
The Liverpool and England midfielder is up against Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin, Juan Pablo Montoya and Andy Roddick.
Gerrard is the only footballer to be nominated in any of the award's seven categories.
The winners of what organizers call the "Oscars of Sport" will be announced May 14 in Monte Carlo.
