The Spanish midfielder, who was part of the Barcelona youth system before joining Malaga, insists that Liverpool have recently been in touch with his agent as Rafael Benitez seeks to make his mark on Merseyside.

"I know they spoke to my agent on Friday, but I don't know if there is a formal offer yet. I am very happy at Malaga and if I leave I want to go to the club who will pay the most to Malaga."

Malaga's club secretary Manolo Hierro has confirmed that the midfield star is indeed attracting the interest of Liverpool - though he admits a bid has yet to be tabled.

He added: "We have to admit that although Liverpool may not have shown direct interest in the player, they have asked about his situation, although they have not made us a formal offer."
