He will also captain his country in the absence of David Beckham and is very proud of what he has achieved at international level.

"Me and Jamie Carragher were talking about caps at dinner and we couldn't believe it will be 50 caps for me on Wednesday, as I thought it wasn't even 25 to 30," said the Liverpool striker. "I'm very proud of that at the age of 23 to win 50 caps.

"It is always a proud feeling to captain England as it is one of the best footballing nations in the world. My next aim is to get my goalscoring record for England up to one in two. I'm just beyond that at the moment."

"I feel more of an all-round player now. The last couple of years my game has developed and I've been dropping deep and linking the play more. I don't just see myself as scoring goals as I can contribute a lot more now.

"People say I'm a big game player but big games are what you live for. A cup final, World Cup, Premier League and Champions League - these are games you don't sleep at night because you are thinking about this type of game. They are great.

"I'd like to think on the big occasions I can raise myself and score or contribute in a certain way. Top occasions for England would be the hat-trick against Germany and the goal in the World Cup against Argentina.

"I don't look back on the World Cup goal against Brazil with great memories because I was injured and didn't feel right, and couldn't do the things I can normally do. I've just tried toforget about that game."
