"Miracles ARE possible...."

Liverpool found themselves 3-0 down to AC Milan at half time but manager Rafael Benitez refused to panic. During the half time break he didn't rant and rave, he simply told the players where they were making mistakes and how they could correct them. He sent Didi Hamann on to shore things up and the fightback was about to commence.

Liverpool came back onto the pitch for the second half with a defiant You'll Never Walk Alone in their ears. The team were hailed as heroes as they emerged from the tunnel and the players knew they'd have to reward the fans for such amazing support. They certainly did that.

From 3-0 down and possibly facing the heaviest defeat in a European Cup final ever to 3-3 and the greatest final of all time in six amazing minutes.

Liverpool's fightback began with an AC Milan free kick. Schevchenko hammered the free kick through the wall but Jerzy Dudek was alert to the danger and palmed the ball around the post. From the resultant corner Liverpool broke through John Arne Riise.

Riise exchanged passes with Xabi Alonso before attempting a cross that was charged down by Cafu. Riise tried again and this time his cross was met by Steven Gerrard who headed the ball into the top right corner of Dida's goal. 3-1.

Two minutes later it was 3-2. Steven Gerrard found Luis Garcia at the edge of the box but the Spaniard, or possibly Milan Baros, was flagged offside. However, the referee either didn't see the linesman's flag or decided to ignore it when AC Milan half cleared the ball. The ball was returned and Liverpool won a throw. Riise threw it Alonso who passed it square to Hamann. Hamann passed it sideways to Vladimir Smicer who took one touch before scoring the most important and most widely celebrated goal of his career. The tide had turned.

Jamie Carragher came tearing up the wing three minutes later before passing to Milan Baros on the edge of the Milan area. Baros flicked the ball into the pass of the onrushing Steven Gerrard and the only way Gattuso could stop the Liverpool captain was to bring him down. Penalty!

Xabi Alonso stepped up to take the pen and although Dida guessed right and saved Alonso's original shot, the Basque had followed his shot in and was first to the ball to fire home the rebound into the roof of the net. 3-3.

Milan were able to get back into the game after that and although there were chances for a fourth Liverpool goal, Riise having a shot saved minutes after the equaliser and Garcia shooting wide while on the edge of the six yard box, the 90 minutes ended with the scores level at 3-3.

Liverpool were shattered in extra time and were just trying to keep Milan at bay. They succeeded until the last couple of minutes when Shevchenko found space at the edge of the six yard box. His inital shot was saved by Dudek but the rebound fell to him with the Liverpool goalie still on the floor. Somehow Dudek got up and got his hands to Shevchenko's second shot and deflected it over the bar for a corner. That impossible save was the moment many Liverpool players and supporters knew they were going to win the European Cup.

The game went to penalties and successful kicks from Didi Hamann, Djibril Cisse and Vladimir Smicer along with a miss from Serginho and saves by Dudek from Pirlo and Shevchenko ensured Liverpool won the European Cup for keeps.
