The 26-year-old former Crewe star has struggled to recapture the sparkling form that saw him named Liverpool's Player of the Year in the last campaign, but he is desperate to make his mark on a major tournament after missing out on a World Cup place due to injury.

Murphy said: "For me Euro 2004 is something I am really striving to achieve because I missed out on the World Cup with injury despite already being over there.

"At the time you try and deal with it best you can, but looking back it was a great opportunity for me because the lad who replaced me, Trevor Sinclair, actually played in most of the games.

"This year I just have to make sure I do everything I can at club level to be selected and be involved in a big tournament.

"I have just got to be one of those players who does enough this season to edge myself in. It's all about club performances. There are probably five or six definites and maybe two or three positions in midfield that six or seven of us are fighting for. I have to make sure my form for Liverpool is right."
