Murphy: Cup win is not real success

The England midfielder was delighted by a sixth cup success in just two years, but he knows league positions mark the true ability of any side.

Murphy said: "I don't think you can say we're just a cup team. Last season we won 80 points in the Premiership which showed we did have quality on a consistent basis.

"Okay, we've had the blip this season but I wouldn't rule out us turning that around.

"It's difficult to measure what will make a successful season now we've won a trophy. I think we have set such high standards for ourselves we expect to qualify for the Champions League.

"At the same time, whene you only enter four competitions and you win one of them, you can't say it's been a bad season. The memories of what happened last week will stay with us for the rest of our career.

"But as an individual, I have to say I think real success is showing consistency in the league and that means finishing in the Champions League positions.

"That's the pinnacle of every player's career and it's what everyone at the club wants."
