Murphy fighting for future

Following his tremendous exploits of two seasons ago when the former Crewe playmaker was crowned Liverpool's Player of the Year, the new season represents a fresh challenge for the England international following a year of strife and struggle under Gerard Houllier.

Murphy said: "I've got two years left but in effect it's only one because by the time I get to the end of the season I'll probably know whether the boss fancies me and if I'll get a new contract.

"You've got to perform to stay at Liverpool, which is where I want to be. I don't want to go through what I went through last season. The season covers 55 or 60 games and I started only 28 or 29 last year. I don't think I could go through that again."

"I felt a little bit hard done by last season and I don't mind saying so. I thought I should have been playing more games than I did. When you're on the sidelines so often it doesn't just affect your football it affects your home life. You're just miserable all the time."
