Murphy hails captain fantastic

The dynamic 23-year-old midfield general has led by example with his sparkling form on the pitch since he was installed as Liverpool captain and Murphy feels the decision to reward the England man with such an honour so early in his carer has proved to be a wise decision by Gerard Houllier.

Murphy, speaking to LFC Magazine, said: "He's taken to the job like a duck to water. Stevie is a born leader. He is a leader in the way he plays, but he's developing the side of organising and talking to players - just being the type of person you look up to.

"I'm not going to say he's going to be the best captain Liverpool have ever had, even though he's got the potential to be. On the pitch, physically, he is fantastic and he's learning to cope really well with the job off it.

"But don't get me wrong: you've got to give Sami Hyypia credit for the way he has dealt with it as well. Since he has not been captain his performances have been fantastic."
