Murphy happy to be the centre of attention

The England international has spent much of the season as an unorthodox right sided midfielder. An injury to Dietmar Hamann, though, has given Murphy the chance to prove himself in his favoured position. It is a chance that the 25 year-old has been more then happy to take.

Murphy said: "I think with El Hadji Diouf playing well on the right it's helped the manager have different options and we have players who can rotate around different parts of the field during a game. It's very flexible and makes us less predictable.

"I don't mind playing on the right, but in the middle you've got the chance to grab the game by the scruff of the neck a bit more.

"I think it's helped me being in there alongside Stevie [Gerrard] because we link up well. Neither of us sit in front of the back four, but we have a good understanding where one of us bombs forward sometimes and the other sits or vice versa."
