Murphy decided to join Charlton this week after he was told he would not be a first team regular in Rafa Benitez' Liverpool side. Murphy claimed he was happy to sign for Charlton as it meant playing under an English manager with English players.
"Fans relate to local players, players especially. It's important that, whatever club you are at, there is a nucleus of English players," said Super Dan.
"If Michael goes, there's another one gone. It would be sad to see him go - just as it has been sad for myself to go," he declared.
"You always have a degree of team spirit because you're a group of players with the same goal.
"But I think it's inevitable, when you have such a cosmopolitan club as Liverpool - and the number of English players diminish as the seasons go by - the spirit becomes less and less.
"How do you replace the Robbie Fowlers and Neil Ruddocks of this world? You don't.
"That's part and parcel of football these days. That's why it was important to me to come to a club like Charlton with a good spirit, where the lads get on and there wasn't such a cosmopolitan approach."
Rafael Benitez last night gave debuts to local lads Stephen Warnock and Darren Potter.
