Murphy ready for England chance

The 26-year-old has become a regular member of the national squad in the last 12 months and, despite acknowledging that he faces stiff competition from a midfield full of quality, he feels a place in the starting eleven is a realistic target in the forthcoming season.

Murphy said: "After playing for Liverpool, being involved with England is the second thing I look for. I have been involved in most of the squads over the last 12 months, which is encouraging.

"If I perform somewhere near to last season then I'm sure I will get the chance again. With England it is always difficult because you are not just competing with average players, you are competing with three of the best midfielders in Europe.

"Stevie [Steven Gerrard], Scholesy [Paul Scholes] and Becks [David Beckham] are world-class players. I will just keep plugging away and if a chance comes then I will try and make sure I am the next knocking on the door.''

The former Crewe man was a rare shining light in what was a dismal season by Anfield's lofty standards and he feels his continued improvement can be explained by the fierce pressure that one faces at a club of the stature of Liverpool.

"When you get to a stage at a club where you know you are not going to miss the next game if you have a bad 20 minutes, it gives you a spring in your step,'' explained Murphy.

"It gives you more courage to try things than you would if you were in fear of your place. That helped me last year. You want to progress each season and I think I have done that."
