Murphy staying positive

Gerard Houllier's side were greeted by a cacophony of jeers and derision from an increasingly frustrated home crowd following a disastrous defeat at the hands of Gordon Strachan's fast-improving Southampton side last Saturday .

According to former Crewe schemer Danny Murphy, however, the barbed criticism fired at the club by media and fans alike is not befitting of a side still just three points adrift of the fourth and final Champions League spot.

Murphy, speaking to the BBC, said: "We've been in worse situations. Things are always exaggerated after one or two bad results. The reality of the situation is we're three points off the Champions League place.

"I'm not saying that's good enough because it isn't, but it's not as if we're fighting relegation.

"We've got some top quality players missing through injury. When we get those players back we know we're capable of going on a run to get back in that Champions League position.

"You have to be careful not to get too carried away when things are going badly, and get too down about it, because it doesn't benefit anyone.

"And on the flip side of that, you've got to be careful not to get too carried away when things are going well, which maybe we have done in the past.

"So we'll keep working hard. We're together, we're all behind each other, the staff and the players, and making sure we're doing things right in training.

"We're looking forward to the next game now to put things right. The best thing to do when you've lost a disappointing game is to win the next one."
