Murphy vows to improve

The 26-year-old England international proved to be a shining light in a largely disappointing season for a side who had began the campaign as genuine championship challengers.

Murphy's 12 goal tally was his best since he joined the club from Crewe, but he knows only too well that he cannot afford to reflect on past glories if he is to remain an integral part of Gerard Houllier's squad.

Murphy said: "First of all I want to maintain my place in the team and look to play more games because the more games you play then the more chances you have to show people what you can do.

"I need to keep scoring goals as well because goalscoring from midfield is very important. When you're not scoring goals or creating goals from midfield then what are you doing? You need to be contributing and I think I've done that.

"Next season I'll definitely be looking to maintain that and improve again."
