Murphy:Houllier was right to hit out

The 26-year-old England international, who has already netted five times this season, believes that Houllier's stern words have helped him to emerge from his early-season malaise.

Murphy said: "I think the gaffer probably has protected us too much in the past. We've had plenty of meetings over the years when we've had some home truths told to us, but the manager has always kept that private.

"I think the players have always respected him for that, but there comes a point where he's entitled to make his views public.

"I can only speak for myself, but I think I'm the kind of individual who responds better to a kick up the backside than a pat on the back. Every player is different, but I think when you're playing at this level and not doing the business, you've got to expect a rollocking now and again.

"It's never been the gaffer's way to make his feelings so public before, but I think he was right to do so now. In fact, had he done it earlier none of us would have had a right to complain. A lot of us deserved it. And I think the response of the lads at Newcastle showed we've got the message.

"When I look at my own form at the start of this season, I think I went into a comfort zone. I had a good season last year and probably thought it was going to be the same again when really I needed to do more to keep myself at my top level. I was a bit lackadaisical, if I'm honest about it.

"The good thing about our coaching staff is they'll tell you what they think but they're constructive about it.

"I think I'm playing a lot better now. I've managed to grab five goals in my last ten games and if I can carry on at that rate I'll beat my tally of last season. When you're scoring goals, it gives you confidence and your whole game benefits.

"It's more important for the team to perform. But if everyone is doing their job as individuals, the team will play better and the results will improve."
