Newcastle's fixture appeal fails

If Newcastle had been successful they would have gone into their final game knowing what result they would need to secure fourth. However, Premier League rules state that there can be no rearrangement of fixtures for the final day and all teams must kick off at the same time.

A league spokesman said today: "Newcastle are trying to rearrange their match with South-ampton which was due to be played this weekend but can't because of their UEFA Cup commitments.

"However, there is no question of the match being played after the final game of the season against Liverpool." The Magpies will have to reschedule the fixture for April 29 or May 12.
