The Frenchman named an attacking line-up against the newly-promoted first division side, with Harry Kewell and Anthony Le Tallec both revelling in a role behind the front two.

Australian international Kewell, who had struggled on his Liverpool debut against Cologne, showed glimpses of his very best form in the role before his participation was curtailed by injury. 18-year-old Le Tallec also made the most of the creative licence offered by the formation - much to the delight of Gerard Houllier.

Houllier said: "We played a different system to which we usually play. I wanted to see a few things in midfield and there was some good aspects.

"I liked the position Harry Kewell played in between the front two and it looked good. Anthony Le Tallec did the same when he came on and his movement was good."
