Talk with the player resumed on Wednesday night and Gerrard is now keen to extend his contract at the club.

Here's what Rick Parry had to say this morning:

"Steven has decided to stay. He realises how much the club means to him and I think the language he's been using to us.

"He never said I wanted to go, the last few days have been difficult. In the last 24 hours he's reflected on it and thought it through and wants to stay.

"I couldn't be more delighted - it's what we wanted all along. I've apologised to Stevie, I misread his emotions. I guess I thought after Istasnbul we knew where we were going.

"It's obviously been playing on his mind and he was obviously anxious. There were one or two issues with the contract that he took to be a lack of enthuisiasm on our part which it wasn't. He understands that now.

"We've had some emotional moments together and cleared all that and I don't think it'll happen again. I think he just wants a couple of days to clear his head because it's not been easy for him but as far as we're concerned it's the right decision.

"I think we all understand what's required and that's the easy bit. To be fair to Stevie he's not staying because he was concerned about the negativity. I told him to think about the fans in Istanbul and all the positives. Deep down it was always a difficult decision to say he wanted to go.

"We're thrilled and I'm more certain than ever that he's fully committed and this is where he wants to be."
