Newcastle were hammered 3-0 by the Reds at Anfield yesterday and had Joey Barton sent off for a late challenge on Xabi Alonso. After the game Shearer admitted he had no complaints.

"I'm bitterly disappointed to have lost the game. No complaints about the way we lost it - I think the first goal was probably offside, just, but would that have changed the outcome of the game? Probably not," said the Newcastle boss.

"They were the better side and deserved to beat us. It could have been a few more but for the woodwork but we'll regroup. This game wasn't going to save our season today but the next two will.

"I wasn't happy, I was bitterly disappointed at the way that happened," he added about the sending off..

"I asked him [Barton] to stay calm in the heat of the battle but it was a stupid tackle and he deserved to be sent off."
