Rafael Benitez wanted to sign the Trinidad & Tobago striker on loan for the rest of the season as cover for Fernando Torres. However, a move is highly unlikely after Sunderland boss Steve Bruce flatly refused to sanction a loan move.
The Reds could sign Jones if they were prepared to match the Mackems' £10m valuation of the player but there is no way the owners will give Benitez that sort of money.
