The dynamic 21-year-old will test his fast-improving skills against Gerrard when Sam Allardyce's men host the Reds at the Reebok Stadium tomorrow, fully aware that Sven-Goran Eriksson thought to be casting an attentive eye over his England credentials.

Nolan said: "Gerrard is one of England's best midfielders and I hope soon I might be able to play alongside him for the national team.

"He has been superb this season. Since he got the captain's armband, he has raised his game to another level. I have always admired him on and off the pitch. He is a great player and he seems a really nice lad. He has his feet firmly on the ground."

"If he (Eriksson) does rate you then you think you always have a chance. It is always nice to get recognition, and maybe my future will see me as an England international.
