Real Madrid have told the former Liverpool man that they will not stand in his way should he want to leave, prompting speculation of a return to the Premiership.

Manchester United appear to be favourites for his signature, despite no exlamation of interest from Sir Alex Ferguson.

Newcastle boss Graeme Souness wants Owen, but it is very unlikely he will sign for a club that is not involved in European football this season.

Former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier would like to lure him to Lyon, while Monaco have also expressed an interest.

According to the BBC's Phil McNulty Liverpool have definitely not ruled out a move for Owen.
