Owen desperate for Anfield glory

While many onlookers have made it clear that the 23-year-old England star's would be better served away from Merseyside, Owen insists that he can fulfil all of his ambitions at the club he has served so well for over a decade.

Owen said: "I want to fulfil all my ambitions at Liverpool. When I say I want to play in the Champions League, I'm saying I want to play in and win the Champions League with Liverpool. When I say I want to win the Premiership, I mean I want to win the Premiership with Liverpool. In an ideal situation, this is what's going to happen.

"The ambitions I have are the same as everyone else at the club and all the fans. If I didn't feel that way, I'm sure people would think something was wrong.

"In fact, I think most fans will be happy that's how I feel because there's no point being here if you're not ambitious. I just want to play football and win the top medals...with Liverpool.

"To be fair, I don't blame supporters for jumping to the wrong conclusions. All I can ever do is hope that perhaps they're a bit wiser to how things are these days with regards interviews.

"I know it's only a few people who made comments accusing me of holding the club to ransom, but it does hurt to hear it from anyone. Players do listen to the radio and when you know you've not said something but people are believing it, it's upsetting.

"In the case of last week, a lot of the comments which I'm supposed to have said were made up. I could recognise some of the sentences as mine, but other words were used which, although I know what they meant, just aren't in the kind of vocabulary I use. All this about having to 'remedy' the fact we're not in the Champions League. It's just not the way I speak.

"We're now trying to get to the bottom of it, but it seems it was pieced together from old interviews after England internationals. I've reached the point where I now think to myself 'should I bother doing an interview anymore?'. Since the contract issue arose it's been my view not to speak about it because I remember what happened last time.

"As soon as I said I wanted to stay, the next thing I was reading was about these huge wage demands I was supposedly making.

"This time I know I've been getting stick because people have been saying 'why isn't Michael Owen saying anything about his contract?'. You can't win no matter what you do. If you speak you leave yourself open to be misquoted. If you don't, it's because you want to leave.

"In the end we had a situation where because everything was quiet someone has gone and made my words up. I felt by the end of last week I had no choice but to put the record straight.

"As soon as a few quotes like that appear, the thing snowballs and you have to come and defend yourself. And that's what I did."
