The 23-year-old headed home from a pinpoint Steven Gerrard cross to draw level with Sir Geoff Hurst and move into the top ten of England goal-scorers that includes such names as Alan Shearer, Jimmy Greaves and, of course, the current leading national scorer, Sir Bobby Charlton.

Charlton's impressive tally of 49 goals is undoubtedly within reach of Owen, who could have as many as ten years left in his career to claim the illustrious landmark, but the Chester-born forward has made it clear that he is not aiming to overhaul the Manchester United legend just yet.

Owen said: "I'm not even half-way to the main target. I won't think about it until - if - I'm in the 40s."
