Owen eager for new season

The 23-year-old striker - who overtook Kevin Keegan in the England scoring ranks with his 21st and 22nd goals for his country against Slovakia - feels as fit and fresh as he has ever done throughout his short but eventful career.

"It was great to get another two goals last night and I feel really good at the moment," said Owen. " Now I'm looking forward to bit of a rest over the summer, which is longer than I've had before, but I'm hoping I'll start next season for Liverpool just as well as I've ended this one.

"It will be a big season for us next year and hopefully I'll have the European Championships to look forward to. I never felt right at the end of the World Cup a year ago and when I started last season I wasn't as sharp as I wanted to be.

"I feel totally different now and with a good pre-season, all things being well I can get off to a good start and continue my goalscoring form."

A keen Owen will, however, be allowed to rest his jet-heeled feet until the Reds begin their pre-season campaign with a trip to Germany to face Bundesliga outfit FC Cologne on July 16th.
