According to reports in the Scottish Daily Record, insiders at La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid have ruled out a summer swoop for the prolific 24-year-old forward.

A Madrid source reportedly said of Owen: "Owen has done well for England but Real have looked at his fitness and don't think he will be able to maintain his condition over a season."

Madrid's rivals at the Nou Camp also seem set to move for Serie A strikers David Trezeguet and Christian Vieri instrad of moving for the Liverpool marksman.

"We want David Trezeguet or Christian Vieri and not Owen," said a Barcelona source.
