Owen hoping for better performance this time

The Newcastle frontman was given a frosty reception on his return to Anfield on Boxing Day 2005.

After moving to Real Madrid then turning down the chance to return to Liverpool in favour of a better deal at St James Park, Owen was taunted for missing out on the chance to win the European Cup with Rafa's Reds and his choice to 'sign for a big club'. Liverpool won the game comfortably, 2-0.

Owen returns to Anfield on Saturday hoping to forget that day, and improve his goalscoring after only netting three times in his last 16 games for the club.

"If you get a result at your old club it's always nice - and then you can meet old friends, knowing you've given them a good game," he said.

"You don't want to be sticking your head down and sliding out of a side door to get back on the coach and get back up the road."
