Owen hoping for new signings

While Houllier has already began his summer spending spree wit the shrewd purchase of Steve Finnan from Fulham, 23-year-old Owen feels that he needs more support at the other end of the pitch.

Owen said: "Obviously next season is a very big one for us. Every season before the last one we had taken steps forward and last time it was a big step backward. We need to get back on the ladder climbing upwards, and quickly.

"The manager will add a couple of players to the squad and lets hope they can make a difference.

"It's not for me to pick the manager's team but certainly he will look to strengthen some areas. We have always had a good defence so maybe it's going forward where we could do with a bit of reinforcement."
