Owen hoping to be on the spot

The 24-year-old forward's misses from the spot proved costly as Liverpool made a tame exit from the FA Cup at Portsmouth and suffered defeat at Southampton in the league, but he has vowed to step up if needed in Euro 2004.

Owen said: I certanly wouldn't shirk responsibility if the manager or anyone wanted me to take a penalty. I wouldn't have a problem.

"I've not had a great record for Liverpool but I think I'm three in three for England so I've not let anyone down yet.

"I think David Beckham's stolen the honour in the national team. I took one when he was absent up at Middlesbrough in the qualifier. I managed to score that one but I think David Beckham is the England penalty taker."
