Owen: I can only get better

The England forward, despite being short of his best on many occasions, has scored twenty times this season for the Reds as well as equalling Ian Rush's record number of European goals for the club. Owen, though, insists that he can still improve at Anfield.

Owen told the club's official website: "I reckon I know 10 times more about being a striker than when I first started playing for Liverpool. And I don't reckon I'll reach my peak for another five or six years.

"When I was 18, I made my mark with pace and enthusiasm. I played without fear. I didn't even think who I was playing against.

"But I soon found opponents trying to force me onto my left foot and they would back off so I couldn't use my pace to get past them.

"I had to work hard on my weaker foot, my heading ability and holding up the ball. In a 90 minute game you may only have 40 seconds of possession so it has to be good. Football is 90 per cent mental and that's where you see the world class players."
