Owen offers Rooney warning

17 year-old Rooney's brief cameo performance against Liechtenstein has led many to call for the player to start England's next match against Turkey on Wednesday. Owen, though, knows more then most that a footballer must be protected at such a young age.

Owen said: "Wayne could be an unbelievable player and an England regular for the next decade, but no one knows yet. The way he's being handled at the moment is, I think, the right way.

"When I was coming through at Liverpool, I wasn't playing in every single game. was rested here and there , and David Moyes looks to be doing the same. I think it's only right if the same is done with England."
