The former Leeds man played a telling pass to send Michael Owen through on goal for the Reds opening strike of the match before he netted his first goal in a Liverpool shirt to complete a memorable derby day for both him and his new club at Goodison Park.

While the majority of the morning headlines will focus upon Owen's timely return to form, the England striker insists that 24-year-old Kewell is deserving of much of the credit for the crucial victory.

Owen said: "I didn't have a good record in the derby until the last couple of years so it's nice to score today, especially here.

"The only thing we've been lacking is the final ball, a cross or through-ball - and Harry's great through-ball started it off here and it continued from there.
