Owen ready to strike

The prolific forward has failed to find the net in the five games since he returned from a six-week injury lay-off, but he insists that he is delighted with his overall form for Gerard Houllier's Champions League challengers.

Owen said: "Apart from a chance I remember having in the Wolves game, I don't really think I've had much opportunity to even kick at goal in the last three matches.

"We've been playing really well and creatively and a lot of the other lads seem to be getting a lot of chances. They're just not falling for me at the moment. It happens in football, but I'm sure they will come.

"Even though I'm desperate to score that first goal for myself, if someone is in a better position than me, I'll pass to them. I'm searching for a good chance for myself, but history tells me not to worry too much about it because once I get one I'll be fine and I'll probably get a few more straight away.

"Normally when I come back I need a lot of matches and training sessions because I feel really rusty within myself.

"This time, I feel as though my touch has been quite good immediately. I don't feel I've lost a lot of sharpness, despite being out.

"To be honest, since I've been back it's been the same pattern as with every other time I've returned from injury.

"It always takes me a couple of games to get my touch and get the goals flowing. Then it's normally around this time - after four or five game - I start scoring again.

"I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Bolton. I know I just need that first goal to get me going because I feel fine. I'm happy with a lot of my game and the only thing I'm looking for is to start getting the goals now. I actually think I'm playing quite well outside the box."

While Owen's profligate form in front of goal may be a concern to some, the England marksman is more then happy with the upturn in fortunes at Anfield.

He added: "Results have picked up in the last three weeks," he said. "Having myself, Carra, Stevie Gerrard and Harry Kewell back has made a difference. Milan Baros' return is just around the corner. Once everyone has had a few games and is back to good form I'm sure we can have a great end to the season.

"It's been a stop-start season for a lot of very influential players. That's made it tough, but we can shine between now and the end."
